When I was approached by Falmouth Rugby Club committee asking if I would accept nomination for Club President, I was rather surprised and honoured at the same time. My association with the club has been very recent and only as a sponsor. There can be very few Presidents who have not played rugby for the club in the past.
Falmouth Rugby Club has been in existence since 1873 and is one of the oldest rugby clubs in Cornwall and, indeed, in England. Like all amateur clubs some of these years have been better than others and last year the senior team struggled in the league while other age groups, like the Colts, the Under 14s and the Mini Teams, performed really well. Let us see what happens this season.
Now that the uncertainties that existed last year about our future at the Recreation Ground and about our senior coaching arrangements have been resolved, our newly elected committee with many new ideas can take the club’s development progressively forward. Fortunately we have retained the experience of many longstanding committee members whose input into the club over many years has been remarkable.
I would hope that by working together on new projects, like the proposed improvements to the clubhouse, we will be able to create an atmosphere of financial and social wellbeing for everyone who uses our facilities in the future.
Finally, I would like to thank all of our sponsors who have supported our club in the past and, hopefully, will do so in the future. I wish Falmouth Rugby Club every success and look forward to an improved 2009-2010 season.
