RFU Age Grade Rugby

Rugby ensures that every player is able to enjoy rugby in a safe environment where they can develop their personal and social skills as well as a wide array of transferable multi-sports skills. This results in their holistic development as well as their lifelong involvement in rugby and other sports. Age Grade Rugby is the game for all players aged 6 – 18 in clubs, schools, colleges and within the representative pathway and it incorporates the rules of play, regulation, competition formats and the structure of the season. It is based on the principles of player centred, development driven and competition supported with the wants and needs of young people at its heart. The format at various ages ensures that young players play the right rugby at the right time. These formats are supported by the regulations of the Age Grade game and have been developed by scientific research and studies on player development in sport. The principle behind the Rules of Play is to provide a playing format with building blocks to the 15-a-side game that allows players time to get to grips with the basics of running and catching the ball before contact and specialism is gradually introduced – which positively impacts on player safety. The Under 19 Law Variations remain at the scrum and the phased line out introduction starts at Under 14.  The rules ensure there is one consistent game format at each age group in clubs and schools.

Please click here for a simplified guide to the rule and the player progression.

Half Game Rule

The clearest message from young players is that they want to play alongside their friends as part of the team. Players, parents and coaches also tell us that being equitable and inclusive with all players is important to them. That’s why from September 2019 the half game rule comes into regulation in the Age Grade game in Age Grade clubs, schools and colleges. The rule ensures that everyone in the match day squad gets to play at least half the game time available. The half game rule is being introduced following voluntarily implementation in the 2018/19 season and a trial in local club and school competitions in England. If you are interested in viewing the rules for your child’s age group, please click on the link below and select the correct age group under Regulation 15.

RFU Core Values

Rugby’s values of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship are what makes the game special for those who enjoy the environment and culture they create. They define the game and define England Rugby.

Teamwork

Teamwork is essential to our sport. We welcome all new team members and include all because working as a team enriches our lives. We play selflessly: working for the team, not for ourselves alone, both on and off the field. We take pride in our team, rely on one another and understand that each player has a part to play. We speak out if our team or sport is threatened by inappropriate words or actions.

Respect

Mutual respect forms the basis of our sport. We hold in high esteem our sport, its values and traditions and earn the respect of others in the way we behave. We respect our match officials and accept their decisions. We respect opposition players and supporters. We value our coaches and those who run our clubs and treat clubhouses with consideration.

Enjoyment

Enjoyment is the reason we play and support rugby union. We encourage players to enjoy training and playing. We use our sport to adopt a healthy lifestyle and build life skills. We safeguard our young players and help them have fun. We enjoy being part of a team and part of the rugby family.

Discipline

Strong discipline underpins our sport. We ensure that our sport is one of controlled physical endeavour and that we are honest and fair. We obey the laws of the game which ensure an inclusive and exciting global sport. We support our disciplinary system, which protects our sport and upholds its values. We observe the sport's laws and regulations and report serious breaches.

Sportsmanship

Sportsmanship is the foundation upon which rugby union is built. We uphold the rugby tradition of camaraderie with teammates and opposition. We observe fair play both on and off the pitch and are generous in victory and dignified in defeat. We play to win but not at all costs and recognise both endeavour and achievement. We ensure that the wellbeing and development of individual players is central to all rugby activity.

Safeguarding

Everyone shares the responsibility for safeguarding and creating safe environments in rugby union whether as a parent, coach, spectator or club official. All should operate within an accepted ethical framework and demonstrate exemplary behaviour to both safeguard children and protect all personnel from allegations of abuse or poor practice. Children, who are anyone under the age of 18, must be cared for in the correct manner, as set out in the RFU Safeguarding Children Policy. If anyone has any concerns regarding safeguarding within the club, please contact our Safeguarding Officer using the details provided in the contacts list.

Headcase

Recognised as one of the UK’s leading concussion awareness and education resources, the RFU’s HEADCASE programme aims to increase understanding and provide information on concussion and other related topics, including how to prevent and manage suspected concussions. Falmouth Rugby Club in line with RFU guidance continue to take concussion and awareness of head injuries in the sport very seriously. All coaches have been asked to take the online HEADCASE training to recognise and help further prevent issues for both children and adults playing rugby. This training is not limited to coaches, and if you’d like more info click here.

Don't be a headcase. STOP! Check for Concussion

RECOGNISE
know the symptoms and signs of concussion.

REMOVE
any player with a suspected concussion must be removed from play/training IMMEDIATELY and assessed by a health care professional.

RECOVER
give players time to recover fully as you would with any other injury.

RETURN
all players must follow a Graduated Return to Play (GRTP) and be reviewed by a healthcare professional before returning to rugby/sport.

Recognise. Remove and if in doubt SIT THEM OUT!

Kit

For its 150th anniversary year, Falmouth RFC have purchased new match kit for all teams within the club.

For U11 age group and below only a match shirt is provided. They can play in generic black shorts and socks but can buy shorts with club logo if they wish.

For the U12 age group and above, full match kit of matching shirts, shorts and socks will be provided. All match shirts will be managed by each team and distributed on match day and returned after every match. The shorts and socks for the U12 and above age groups will be handed out to all playing members and they will be responsible for them.

If lost, the player will be responsible for replacing them before they will be able to attend fixtures.

Stock items will be held by club for purchase.

This difference in the issuing of kit items is reflected in the different membership bands for the age groups.

For training, any generic rugby kit is suitable. Mouth Guards are required for any contact training (from U9s upwards).

Body armour and head guards are optional.

In addition to this, every paid-up playing member will receive an additional item of clothing over the next 3 years.

In year 1 (2022-23), polo shirts will be issued. These are to be changed into and worn after every fixture.

In year 2 (2023-24), players will receive hoodies and in year 3 (2024-25), windjammer training tops will be issued.

Kit Swaps

In addition to purchasing kit new, the Falmouth Rugby Youth Academy also run kit swaps every Sunday morning during September as well as regularly throughout the seasons. Once a player has grown out their clothes, boots, head guards, body armour, etc, they can donate it to the kit swap stock and see if there is anything available in replacement. Alternatively, any kit can be acquired by payment of a donation to Academy funds.

Training & Fixtures

Fixtures are played on Sunday mornings across the county. Training is held every Sunday from September to May when there are no fixtures. Most of the age groups from Under 9’s up also hold mid-week training sessions. More details of fixtures, training times and dates can be obtained from the respective age group coaches.

Socials, Trips & End of Season Presentation

Falmouth Rugby Youth Academy organise socials throughout the season, such as at Halloween and Christmas. Individual Age Groups can also arrange their own socials to foster team spirit. As an Academy, we arrange a trip to the Exeter Chiefs for the age groups U11, U12 and U13s to take part in one of their Super Saturday/Sunday sessions. There is an opportunity for any girls who play with the club to also attend a similar session to watch Exeter Chiefs Women. For the U10 age group and below, the Academy is happy to arrange coaching clinic trips to the Cornish Pirates. At the end of the season, the club hosts the entire academy for an End of Season Presentation.
